Paper title: LE MODÈLE ÉLECTROSTATIQUE DU PARAFOUDRE (THE ELECTROSTATIC MODEL OF THE LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR)
Author(s): OVIDIU CENTEA,
The model of the atmosphere during thunderstorms is constituted by a cloud ceiling
parallel to the surface of the earth, over which is erected a building having on top a
lighting conductor. Using the Schwartz-Christoffel mapping, the soil and building’s
contour is transformed into a straight line, and thus a parallel plate capacitor is
obtained, which is characterized by a bidimensional uniform electric field. Returning to
the initial contour, it is found that the electric field strength becomes infinite near the
convex corners. Therefore, the lightning will be attracted to these areas. The ratio
between the electric field intensity values at the top of the lightning conductor and at
the convex corners of the building, KP, and the efficiency of the device φ – the quota of
the captured lightning strikes during a thunderstorm, are linked by an exponential
dependence, very useful for the design of the lightning protection systems.
