Paper title: ELECTROSTATIC FIELD WITHIN OIL TANKERS

Author(s): GHEORGHE SAMOILESCU,

Abstract:

The presence of impurities in suspension inside the oil products constitutes the main source to generate electric charges. Any liquid displacement triggers a slide in the free or fixed charges generating an electric current and an accumulation of electrical charges. The electric charge of oil products can be achieved through ionization-as a result of friction, through molecule polarization-as a result of anisotropy between the Van der Waals forces; it can also be a result of compartments washing. Knowing the capacity of generation and the accumulation of the electric charges, their spatial distribution, the accumulated electrostatic energy and the ensuing risks of explosion, new construction and exploiting techniques can be developed for ships designed to carry oil products.
